Palmer
Founded in 1982 by Michael Horne and Palmer Wells, the doors to Theatre in the Square opened for the first performance of On Golden Pond on September 10, 1982 in an 85-seat space adjacent to Marietta Train Depot at 31 Mill Street (now Cool Beans Coffee). Now located in a former cotton warehouse on the historic Marietta Square, it is the only professional theatre and the largest non-profit arts organization in Cobb County.

Theatergoers around the Southeast have discovered Theatre in the Square and embrace it as their own. The Theatre programs a mix of the classics with contemporary work by some of America’s finest playwrights, and features sterling professional talent and excellent production values. Patrons also enjoy the Theatre’s delightful setting -- nestled in the midst of flower-lined cobblestone sidewalks leading to historic landmarks, antique shops, and restaurants. The Theatre itself is a charming surprise – from the wrought iron gates that usher patrons inside, to its comfortable lobby and intimate performance space. Theatre in the Square offers dynamic live theatre in a friendly and accessible environment.

Why is there a Theatre in the Square?

The purpose of Theatre in the Square is to carry on a tradition of live theatre as an important art form, as well as to provide the opportunity to enjoy or participate in professional theatre for all citizens of metro-Atlanta and northwest Georgia. The theatre not only enhances the quality of life within the community, but also pays performers, technicians, directors, designers, and writers, thereby encouraging local theater artists to stretch their imaginations, expand their skills, and develop original works.

The theatre participates in local, regional and national outlets for showcasing our work and our community (i.e., arts festivals, media coverage, touring shows). As a result, it continues to be an integral part of our community and region by offering quality work and encouraging new talent. Consequently, it generates works that will appeal on a national level in representing the character, history, and assets of our region.
