PERCOLATING PLAYREADING SERIES 2007

Theatre in the Square is proud to announce the winner of the 2007 Percolating Playreading Series. Richard Aellen of Tampa, Florida, won the $1000 prize for his play Nobody. Two other plays were up for consideration: The Ones That Flutter by Sylvia Reed from Palmetto, FL., and Roma by Joe Musso from Birmingham, AL. In May of 2007, each of the plays had a reading that took place in the Alley Stage followed by a talkback session led by the theatre’s literary manager/assistant artistic director and founder of the series, Jessica Phelps West.

Nobody is the tragedy of a man who achieves artistic success at the expense of his soul. Bert Williams and his partner, George Walker, struggle as entertainers but fame and fortune elude them until Bert reluctantly appears in blackface. Bert's minstrel character, with his signature song "Nobody," gains them international acclaim but Bert discovers himself trapped behind the minstrel mask: In becoming somebody he has become nobody. Filled with songs and period sketches vaudeville fans will love.

The Percolating Playreading Series nurtures local and regional playwrights by providing a professional reading by well-known Atlanta actors and directors to help further develop the scripts. In 2007, for the first time, a $1000 prize, The Premiere Percolating Playreading Prize, was offered to the winning playwright whose play was chosen by a panel of theatre professionals, playwrights, and a representative of the Premiere Club. The Premiere Club is Theatre in the Square’s volunteer organization and the sponsor of the event.

Theatre in the Square's 2006 Percolating Playreading Series winner was Hot Georgia Sunday by Catherine Trieschmann. Ms. Trieschmann, an author originally from Athens, Georgia, now resides in Kansas. Her work, crooked, was staged in Theatre in the Square’s Alley Stage in April, 2007.

The Percolating Playreading Series has been postponed for 2010. Please check back for information about the 2011 series in the fall.

Submission Guidelines for Regional Playwrights: are the same as stipulated under the Play Development link; however, please submit the manuscript in its entirety.
