Intern Introductions

Matt Derby (Vanderbilt Class of 2007: Summer Intern 2006
Theatre in the Square was absolutely the best summer experience I could have had. I was able to contribute to and experience what goes on in a professional theater, from the top down. Being able to sit in on production meetings and playwriting sessions and rehearsals made all the more mundane tasks worth it and gave me a good sense of what a career in professional theatre actually entails. This was perhaps the most important and significant accomplishment of this summer: the experience of becoming comfortable and confident in what I know, what I can accomplish, and what it takes to be a part of a full company of artists and professionals. Far more than many of my classmates and friends, I actually felt a sense of accomplishment and that I was an important part of the theatre.

Kate Dorrough
A few words from Kate Dorrough (Marietta High School Class of 2006)

After finishing my internship this past year at Theatre in the Square, I believe that I walk away with a better understanding as well as appreciation for both teaching and the administrative facet of a professional theatre. As always, the interns must perform mundane tasks that no one else wants to do, but they rewarded me by allowing free attendance at productions, rehearsal and audition observations as well as participating in a “construction zone” for new plays and sometimes new playwrights. Alan Kilpatrick provided me with a well-rounded understanding of how a theatre operates and thrives. This first hand knowledge will serve me well when I continue to work in theatre and perhaps open my own theatre one day. You never know. If I ever have the opportunity I will strive to achieve it. But if not, I can always teach which is probably equally gratifying and stressful. Nevertheless, it is something I am passionate about and my internship at Theatre in the Square has solidified my decision to attend the University of Minnesota and study Theatre Arts

Intern Updates

Callie Stephens, a Theatre in the Square Youth Apprenticeship Program Intern for 2004-2005, is a sophmore at Brenau University. She is studying theatre and has been involved in several productions at the school. Callie works part time in Theatre in the Square's box office during the summer and holidays.

Nick Christman & Nick Kowalczyk
Last years interns, Nick Christman and Nick Kowalczyk have both begun fall classes at prestigious North Carolina School of the Arts. Both young men worked very hard in scene study classes and private tutorial to hone their audition monologues in hopes of acceptance into NCSA’s nationally recognized program. Theatre in the Square wishes them “best of luck.”
