Bernardine Mitchell



Benardine is an Atlanta native who has performed nationally and internationally in a wide range of roles that includes Mahalia Jackson in Mahalia, Bessie Smith in Bessie's Blues, Mrs. Potts in Disney's Beauty and the Beast, Velma and Mother Shaw in Crowns, Alice in Big River, and the Matron in Chicago.

Bernardine has toured internationally as Antigone in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Broadway musical The Gospel at Colonus since 1995, including performances at the 2005 Vienna Arts Festival in Austria, and the 2008 Greek Arts Festival in Athens. She also played Rose in Lee Breuer's Prelude to the Death in Venice at the 2007 Kilkenny Arts Festival in Ireland.

Bernardine received the 1993 DramaLogue Award in Los Angeles for Best Actress for her portrayal of Bessie Smith at the San Diego Repertory Theatre. She was awarded the 2002 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in Washington DC for her performances as Lady from the Road in Blues in the Night at Arena Stage and the 2005 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress for Mahalia at MetroStage in Alexandria, Virginia. She also won the 2005 Suzi Bass Award for Best Actress for Mahalia at Theatre in the Square.

Bernardine has been featured in concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, with the Harlem Gospel Singers on their 1997-98 tour of Europe, the Institutional Radio Choir of Brooklyn 1996 tour of Brazil, on ABC-TV's Today Show, and in the CBS TV movies The Guyana Tragedy and A Resting Place, starring Morgan Freeman.

Bernardine majored in Voice and Musical Theatre at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio, and has been a proud member of the Actor's Equity Association (AEA) since 1979. TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!
