Gary Yates
As an actor, Mr. Yates has over 25 years of professional experience in the area of regional theatre, film and television. He started his acting career in New York working in theatres and daytime soaps: Ryan’s Hope and Search For Tomorrow to name a few. His stage credits range from the theatres in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago to Atlanta. His past productions in Atlanta at Alliance Theatre include A Christmas Carol, Sterling in Two Trains Running, Lymon in The Piano Lesson, and Asagai in Raisin in The Sun starring Ester Rolle. He originated the role of Leland in Blues for An Alabama Sky starring Phylisha Rashad. Other local theatres include Theatrical Outfit, Horizon Theatre, Theatre in the Square, and 7 Stages. Mr. Yates has also guest-starred on television show such as Seinfeld, Sparks, Heat of the Night, I’ll Fly Away, Kirk, The Client and supporting roles in such films as Drumline, Fled, Midnight Edition and Past Life.
He is known for directing such plays as The Piano Lesson, Blue Door, The Story, and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder at Theatre in the Square, Hambone at Horizon Theatre, Sisters at New Jomandi, and Pure Confidence and Gee’s Bend at Theatrical Outfit.
Aside from his professional career, Mr. Yates is the Chair of the Speech Communication and Theatre Arts Department at Clark Atlanta University-Atlanta.
He received his M.F.A. in Acting at Indiana University-Bloomington School of Theatre.
